In ABC, three story lines intertwine to create a tale of growing up different. Jin Yang simply wants to fit in, and he’s happy to leave behind his Chinese culture to do it. Danny is all-american boy, who’s embarrassed of his cousin, “Chin-Kee,” a caricature of every Chinese stereotype you can imagine. The final plotline is a retelling of the traditional story of the monkey king, with emphasis placed on transformation and the inability to ever lose who you really are. The art is clean and bright, the writing intelligent and funny. A quick read (230-ish pages), and entirely worthwhile.
